Zahra’s Melbourne Cup Dilemma

Zahra’s Melbourne Cup Dilemma

Last year’s Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m)- winning rider Mark Zahra is faced with a difficult decision in the coming weeks, as he chooses his ride for this year’s edition of the race.

Zahra is set to ride the 2022 Melbourne Cup winner Gold Trip (Outstrip) in Saturday’s Cox Plate at Moonee Valley, but will need to decide between Gold Trip and last Saturday’s Caulfield Cup winner Without A Fight (Teofilo) for Flemington’s feature.
Without A Fight’s co-trainer Sam Freedman, who trains in partnership with father Anthony, says Zahra has the pick of Australia’s two best stayers. “He’s in an enviable position of having two of the best stayers for him to ride,” Freedman told Racing.com.
“In terms of the Melbourne Cup, we know he will ride Gold Trip in the Cox Plate. I don’t know where we will be with a rider, but hopefully he will stick with him in the Melbourne Cup. He’s the best rider in these sorts of races. He gets it right more often than not and we really wanted him to ride the horse, but he was never locked into it.”
