Winx’s Snitzel sibling likely to retire unraced

The hopes of unearthing another Winx-like superstar are back on ice after news the champion mare’s three-year-old half-sister Courchevel is unlikely to make it to the racetrack.

Breeder John Camilleri confirmed on Wednesday that Courchevel, who is by Snitzel and who he retained as a yearling, had left the Melbourne stables of Ciaron Maher and Dave Eustace and was now in Sydney where she will be re-assessed, with the breeder noting that ‘it is likely she will retire unraced’.

If so, Courchevel will become the fourth foal out of Vegas Showgirl unable to race, following Miss Atom Bomb (2010), Win Win Leader (2012) and Boulder City (2014).

Boulder City, who was sold by Camilleri’s Fairway Thoroughbreds for $2.3 million as a yearling, did not

race but has forged a career as a stallion on the back of Winx’s deeds.

He stands at Riverbank Farm near Benalla, where he served 90 mares at a fee of $5500 during his first season and a further 60 mares at the same fee last season.

With a slip to Encosta De Lago in 2009 and misses to stallions Snitzel in 2015 and Exceed And Excel in 2018, only two horses out of Vegas Showgirl have made it to the races.

Winx won 37 of her 43 races, including her last 33 wins in a row while Il Divino (by Snitzel) won a Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes in Sydney as a two-year-old before meeting an untimely death as a four-year-old when he fractured a cannon bone while galloping at Ararat for trainer Darren Weir.

Camilleri still has a deal to look forward to as 18-year-old Vegas Showgirl has a filly at foot by super Japanese stallion Deep Impact and has been served by I Am Invincible.
