Another Victorian race meeting has been disrupted due to poor air quality with Tuesday’s Werribee meeting abandoned.
Racing Victoria officials made the decision on raceday morning at 7:30am, six hours before the first of eight races was scheduled.
Much of Melbourne has been blanketed by smoke since Monday morning, the conditions deteriorating further on Monday night with winds from the north-west pushing smoke from bushfire affected areas towards Victoria’s capital.
The Air Quality Index describes Melbourne’s conditions as hazardous with the Bureau of Meteorology predicting little improvement for the remainder of Tuesday.
The Wangaratta meeting on December 23 was abandoned due to poor air quality while last Tuesday’s meeting at Stony Creek was delayed by 48 hours and held without incident on Thursday.
