Walker abused after cup ride
Jockey Michael Walker has quit social media having been the subject of online abuse for
his ride on Melbourne Cup runner-up Prince Of Arran (Shirocco). Walker was fined $10,000 and suspended for seven days for his use of the whip in the tight finish to Tuesday’s race and he has since revealed that the incident made him a target for trolls.
“I put a post up yesterday on Facebook for my daughter’s birthday and some cruel person went and edited that post and asked how would my daughter like to be
hit, how would my mother, my wife – I am not married – but my partner, like to be hit,” Walker told Racing.com. “(It is) very cruel so I’ve gone off all social media and I don’t know when I will go back on. I’ve copped a lot of abuse from people that don’t know me. I am pretty flat today.” Walker, who said the present rules governing whip use were “brilliant” added he felt modern whips were more about sound than feel but said he supported the ban on overuse.
