US: Medina Spirit disqualified from Kentucky Derby
Last year’s Kentucky Derby (Gr 1, 10f ) winner Medina Spirit (Protonico) has been stripped of his title after the stewards in Kentucky finally reached a resolution to the long running saga over a post-race sample taken from the late colt. Both the test, and a subsequent split sample, indicated the presence of the corticosteroid betamethasone, prohibited at any level on race day in the state.
Medina Spirit’s Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert was suspended for 90 days and fined $7,500, in addition to losing his record seventh win in the race. Baffert’s suspension, pending an appeal, will run from March 8 through to June 5. With the stewards’ decision in place, Mandaloun (Into Mischief ) is declared the winner. All other runners are moved up one spot. The changes give Juddmonte, trainer Brad Cox, and jockey Florent Geroux their first Kentucky Derby win.
