Smallest Oaks crowd in 25 years
The VRC’s experiment of running Oaks Day as a twilight fixture hasn’t worked in their favour,
at least on the evidence of this year, as the day recorded its lowest attendance in 25 years. The
idea was to attract people to the race meeting after finishing work but with a crowd figure of
57,296, the lowest since 1994, the experiment seems to have failed. Crowd numbers were
also down about 10,000 for Derby Day (80,214) and 1,000 on Cup Day (81,408). The weather
hasn’t helped the VRC’s case as rain dampened festivities on Saturday and yesterday.
