Racing NSW’s Peter V’landys is poised to take up another 3 year term as chair of the Australian Rugby League Commission

Racing NSW Chief Executive Peter V’landys stands poised to extend his tenure as Chair of the Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) for another three-year term, a role he has concurrently held since 2019. The looming re-election, brought to public attention by former ARLC Chair Peter Beattie ahead of today’s ARLC annual general meeting, coincides with V’landys’ impressive 20-year tenure as CEO of the racing regulator. Concurrently, the process to appoint a new board member and chair of Racing NSW is underway.

Last November, the Minns Labor Government encountered an embarrassing reversal, retracting proposed legislation that, if passed, would have facilitated an unprecedented 14-year tenure for Russell Balding on the Racing NSW board. Uncertainty lingers over whether V’landys’ dual roles will maintain the backing of Racing NSW’s directors amidst forthcoming appointments.

Commenting on V’landys’ performance, Beattie humorously remarked to radio station 2GB yesterday, “He’s been the best chairman the game’s ever had – certainly better than the previous one.” Beattie expressed confidence in V’landys’ continued leadership, affirming his anticipation of another three-year term.

An independent selection panel, reportedly including V’landys’ long-time associate in harness racing, John Dumesny, as a government-appointed member, is tasked with presenting recommendations to Racing Minister David Harris regarding board appointments following Balding’s departure.

Dr. Saranne Cooke, who served as vice-chair under Balding’s recent tenure and has assumed the interim chair position since his exit, received a two-year extension to her eight-year term in December.

Tony Shepherd, former Chairman of Greater Western Sydney Giants, WestConnex, and Venues NSW, and a member of the Racing NSW board since 2017, is favored to assume the role of Racing NSW Chair.

In other news, yesterday’s Wyong racing event was postponed due to inclement weather conditions. Racing NSW has rescheduled the event for tomorrow, with scratchings reinstated and race times updated.
