There is one final bow to come yet in Damien Oliver’s retirement tour with the star jockey back on the horse to get himself fit for a one-off return in Saudi Arabia later this month.
Oliver was spotted riding a few at the Friday Flemington jump-outs and later his former manager Mark Van Triet confirmed the champion rider who had his dramatic final Australian ride in December in Perth, will saddle-up one more time.
“He’s getting himself ready for the Saudi international jockey’s challenge at the end of February so he’s just fine-tuning himself before that,” Van Triet said.
“He’s not doing a Frankie (Dettori). This is definitely a one-off.”
Former champion rider Glen Boss signed off on his career in the spring of 2021 but he too returned for the jockey’s challenge on Saudi Cup night in Riyadh on February 24.
Vain Triet said Oliver did not require much work to get back to full fitness, “He always keeps himself in good nick so he’ll be fine,” he said.
