Managing part-owner Rod Lyons reported that Nature Strip had emerged with a clean bill of health from last Saturday’s Black Caviar Lightning.

“He’s back in Sydney, he pulled up fine after Saturday, he scoped clean, no blood, no mucus, he wasn’t lame,” Lyons said.

“He went to the beach on Sunday and Monday and arrived back in Sydney on Tuesday morning. Chris’ own vet went right over him and found nothing wrong with him, so its onwards and upwards towards the T.J.”

The big chestnut gelding finished sixth behind Coolangatta in the Lightning, having gone into the race as the $1.95 favourite, however, Lyons believes that his performance wasn’t as disappointing as it may have looked in the immediate aftermath.

“Analysing Saturday’s run, they went very, very hard, he never got a moment’s peace, he was taken on by the stablemate of the winner (Marabi), had to give the winner 5kg under the weight-for-age scale,” Lyons said.

“He couldn’t have run much faster than he did and he got a little bit tired the last little bit.

“On the day, we were all bitterly disappointed but when you analyse it, he couldn’t have done much more than he did, and he got beaten a couple of lengths.

“It’s not as bad as it actually felt on the day when you put that disappointment aside.”
