Mick Price – “RV must lobby the Government for some sort of exemption from the recent increase increase to Workcover”

Leading trainer Mick Price has called on Racing Victoria to lobby the State Government for legislative change to Workcover arrangements, claiming the recent hike in workers’ compensation premiums is ‘a massive hit’.

“RV must lobby the Government for some sort of exemption from the increase because of the nature of our industry, because we did get catastrophic injuries when people ride horses,” Price said on Thursday of the recent steep rise in premiums.

“The calculations are punitive. For a horse training industry that does not make that much profit, it’s a massive hit as we are labour-intensive.

“It is going to be massive for me, I haven’t worked out the exact cost as I do pay a Workcover consulting firm and have done for a lot of years, to reduce my costs, but you can’t reduce this one.

“Why would you work 60 or 70 hours a week, every week and do all the business over 30 years if you are only going to break square, or worse, lose?

“The future is, you make less money. It’s pretty simple. As if you haven’t got exorbitant costs anyway. The end user is the owner, so it’s speaking on behalf of owners and trainers.

“Some of the stables in Victoria are already adding a levy for these huge fees.”

Price said the racing industry should be its own licensed re-insurer, so as to find less-stifling ways of meeting the premiums.

“We as an industry, unfortunately, with work riders, we do sometimes suffer serious injuries. There’s the injury and costs involved with surgery, there’s the rehab and time off work, so I get that it’s a very expensive industry for Workcover.

“So, unless we lobby the Victorian Government and change the legislation, it will not change. We don’t run our own insurance model. The Victorian State Government models it.

“In Sydney, its part funded by Racing NSW and part-funded by owners with a fee taken out of earned prizemoney.”
