Melbourne Cup: Latest field & jockeys

The Melbourne Cup Field is taking shape with only five more sleeps until the first Tuesday in November.

News on Thursday that Caulfield Cup winner Durston had been ruled out by Racing Victoria vets has left champion jockey Damien Oliver without a ride in the race and with limited options to find another given the weights of the horses whose connections are yet to confirm a jockey.

Popular jockey Harry Coffey will ride in his second Melbourne Cup on Tuesday with Ciaron Maher and David Eustace opting to book him on Grand Promenade.

The Maher/Eustace stable also has Gold Trip and Smokin’ Romans in the field and they have booked former stable apprentice Teo Nugent to ride one of Bendigo Cup winner High Emocean or import Interpretation should they make the field.

John Allen has been booked for Godolphin’s Alegron if he backs up from the Archer Stakes.

He will ride at 53kg for James Cummings, who has used Allen to good effect in the past with the pair combining at a 20 per cent strike-rate from 25 pairings.

Connections of Geelong Cup winner Emissary hadn’t locked in a rider at the time of writing, but the announcement of Durston’s scratching has secured him a spot in the field for now at 23rd in order.

Mike Moroney’s association with Patrick Moloney will have the Newmarket Handicap-winning jockey in major contention for the ride and he did partner Vengeur Masque, who was owned by similar connections, to 15th in 2018.

Craig Newitt is another jockey in the mix for the ride on Emissary.

2012 Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Brett Prebble is unlikely to have a ride in this year’s race, with the majority of horses left without riders under 52kg, which would be a light weight for Prebble to ride at.

Chad Schofield is one high-profile rider without a ride and he could be sought after by connections of horses with light weights on the cusp of getting into the field.

Last year’s winning trainer Chris Waller has Crystal Pegasus as his lone runner left in the race. He has used Newitt before in the Melbourne Cup, so may opt to book him on the Mornington Cup winner but no rider has yet been confirmed.

Connections would no doubt like to see him run well on Saturday in the Archer Stakes before deciding to pay up for the final field.

Point Nepean won a golden ticket into the race back in May when taking The Andrew Ramsden but has disappointed this campaign and has been passed on by many of the leading riders in this country.

Alana Kelly won the Ramsden on the Team Williams-owned galloper and given Lloyd Williams’ use of female jockeys in the Cup in the past (Katelyn Mallyon and Rachel King), she could be a chance of gaining her first ride in ‘the race that stops a nation’.
