Magnier pays $3M for the brother of star sprinter Sunlight
Coolmore’s Tom Magnier triumphed in an epic bidding war to secure Wednesday’s top lot at Inglis Easter, the brother of star sprinter Sunlight.
Magnier landed the $3 million winning blow – the equal third most expensive yearling ever purchased in Australia – after an arm-wrestle with BK Racing and Breeding, having earlier fended off interest from several other colts syndicates.

Coolmore bought six of the top 20 lots in the catalogue and like his other seven figure purchases, Magnier said the hope was that the son of Zoustar could justify his price tag on the racetrack and one day join Coolmore’s stallion roster.
Magnier said the farm’s affinity with the family – Coolmore paid $4.2 million for Sunlight as a broodmare in 2020 and have mated her with resident stallions Justify and Wooton Bassett – was another motivating factor behind his decision to spend $3 million.
“Obviously we bought Sunlight off Widden and the Thompson family have been producing good horses for a long time,” Magnier said.
“The Sunlight foal at home by Justify is the best foal we have at home so it’s a family that we know well.
“When you’re trying to make stallions, you need to have horses like this.
“He was probably the best type on the sale.
“When you’re going out and buying horses like this you need to have everybody agreeing and this is a horse that ticked every box for the whole team.”
