Lafferty in hospital after fall at Swan Hill

In-demand apprentice Laura Lafferty is conscious but has been taken to hospital in Swan Hill with suspected hip and shoulder injuries following a heavy fall in the final event on the opening day of the June carnival on Friday.

Lafferty crashed to the ground when her mount, the Richard Laming-trained Ronniejay, broke down and ran through the running rail.

The Victorian Jockeys’ Association put out the following update on Friday evening: “Laura Lafferty is conscious and moving all limbs. Transported to Swan Hill Hospital for scans. Possible shoulder and hip injury.”

The 22-year-old has made great strides this season and, with 56 winners, is placed 23rd in the Victorian jockeys’ premiership.

She has five bookings for the Swan Hill Saturday meeting and six rides booked for Sunday’s Cup meeting.
