Great Western meeting abandoned as fire rips through car park

Great Western’s annual Cup meeting had to be abandoned after the running of just one race due to a fire in the car park.
Smoke billowed across the track just prior to the scheduled start time for the second race of the day after a car caught alight.

The fire then spread to multiple cars, with reports of at least 10 vehicles impacted along with a grassfire.
Patrons were evacuated and the meeting abandoned as fire crews attempted to bring the blaze under control.

Racing Victoria reported that all horses, participants and patrons were safe.

The meeting is Great Western’s solitary race day for the year, with the $50,000 Cup over 1950m the feature event.
Beautox for Ciaron Maher Racing (and Dream Thoroughbreds and the Thoroughbred Racing Club)  took out the opening race as the $1.65 favourite.
