Frankie Dettori to ride Verry Elleegant

In what has been described as a “coup”, jockey Frankie Dettori is to ride Melbourne Cup hero Verry Elleegant in her French debut later this month.

Part-owner Brae Sokolski confirmed on Wednesday morning that Dettori’s services were secured overnight with Sokolski noting that “the king rides the queen” when the pair come together for the G1 Prix Jean Romanet (2000m) at Deauville on August 21.

The booking of one of the world’s most famous jockeys gives further confidence to connections that Verry Elleegant is ready to soon step-out into the action after missing her planning first-up run over 1600 metres more than a week ago.

Dettori, 51, has long been one of the world’s most famous riders with the Melbourne Cup being one of the few world features that have eluded him.

The run on August 21 is crucial to Verry Elleegant’s racing future in Europe, but the upside of a big run could end with a shot at the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in Paris on October 2.
