Double for Toronado
Mrs Beckham was the second leg of a Caulfield double for Swettenham Stud’s emerging shuttle sire Toronado (High Chaparral) after exciting three-year-old Masked Crusader took out the Ladbrokes Plate (1200m) by three and three quarter lengths. The Hawkes Racing-trained, Gilgai Farm-bred gelding, who was a $340,000 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale graduate secured by the stable in partnership with agent Cameron Cooke, had finished fifth first-up at Wyong on November 28.
“It’s only a maiden but when he dropped them – wow,” jockey James Winks told Racing.com. “He just struggled around the bend, I just had to wait for him to get his action and drop. When he gained his composure, he just left them behind. The best thing about it is that if he had something to go with him, he would have had something more to give. He’s up there with the better horses, that’s for sure.”
