Baster announces retirement
After 28 years in the saddle, Stephen Baster announced yesterday that he will be retiring from
race-riding at the end of the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
“After a great deal of thought and reflection, I have decided the time has come to move on from my career as a professional jockey,” Baster wrote on Twitter.
“I leave the racing industry feeling nothing but gratitude. I will forever be grateful to the amazing
people who have supported me throughout mycareer.” The 44-year-old began riding in September
1991 and landed the first of his 14 Group 1 wins onMookta (Jugah) in the 1993 Oakleigh Plate (1100m)with his most recent aboard Pinot (Pierro) in the2017 VRC Oaks (2500m).
