Alligator Blood hasn’t had enough work and he’s underdone – Gerry Harvey

Gerry Harvey doesn’t expect an immediate return on his outlay as the new majority shareholder of Alligator Blood, but the highly successful owner and breeder predicts he will be a winner in the longer term.

Alligator Blood was reinstated as a racing proposition in Victoria this week after his undischarged bankrupt owner Allan Endresz sold back his majority share to Harvey, who originally sold the horse as a yearling to Endresz and his Ezybonds No.1 syndicate for $55,000 in 2018.

The wealthy owner of retail store Harvey Norman and the co-owner of Magic Millions told champion trainer Peter Moody on his podcast Moody On The Mic this week that he feels Alligator Blood is not ready for a peak performance in Saturday’s Memsie Stakes at Caulfield, despite being one of the favourites.

“He hasn’t had enough work and he’s underdone and It’s just a barrier trial sort of thing,” Harvey said.

“If he wins, it will be unexpected. But if he runs a nice race and races home then we’ll look forward to winning the Cox Plate.

“But there’s that thing that (James) Cummings has got with Godolphin (Anamoe) and it looks like it might win the Cox Plate, so we might dodge it.”

A last-start winner of the G1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) in Brisbane in June, Alligator Blood has been marked the $5.50 equal Memsie favourite by Sportsbet alongside returning Perth star Western Empire.

Harvey explained how he once again ended up being the majority owner of Alligator Blood after selling him off as yearling when he failed to make his reserve at the 2018 Gold Coast Magic Millions Sale.

“Then I got this bloke Endresz comes up and he doesn’t know anything about horses,” Harvey said. “He’s a mug. So, he took the horse and I thought ‘That will be the end of that’ and it turns out it is Alligator Blood.

“No one liked it and he’s this champion horse, so it just goes to show, you can get all the experts in the world go to the horse sale, but they miss them sometimes and they missed him and he’s a bloody champion.

“I’ve got all his sisters, brothers, relations and I’ve got (his sire) All Too Hard at stud, so I thought to myself ‘If that horse is ever going to race again, I’d better step in and do something’.

“So, I spoke to Endresz and said ‘Mate, I’ll buy you out if you like’ and he said ‘Yeah, yeah I can’t race him and I’ve tried everything else’, so I bought him out.”
